Building Maps: navigation, avi safety, and independence in the winter

Join Marc Chauvin, author of the Mountain Guide Manual and former president of the American Mountain Guides Association, for a course on using free open-source software to make maps to keep you safer, on-route, and having a better time in the mountains in the winter.

This course will be useful for skiers, hikers, runners, alpinists, mountaineers, and anyone else trying to make the most of their time in outdoor spaces.

Marc will teach skills like overlaying/combining multiple maps, using those maps on one's phone, calculating elevation gain and loss over a given route, evaluating the potential sun exposure of a route, projecting avalanche danger using slope shading, and many others.

To join tonight's course, follow Marc's instructions at this link (will take 20 minutes to setup if you are tech savvy, more if you aren't)

What to know before the course:

- Have your laptop/desktop ready with a (free) registered account with Caltopo and Google Earth downloaded and open.

- Be prepared to both use Caltopo and watch the talk at the same time. To make this possible, we suggest using a second monitor to expand the amount of screen space. If this isn't an option, participants could use an additional computer or tablet to watch the lesson while manipulating the software on their computer.

- Have a phone ready with Avenza downloaded (for free) and ready to use.

More about marc

He has a diverse background in mountaineering but it all started with hiking the Appalachian Trail in 1975. Soon after he turned to technical climbing and in 1977, Marc completed a number of big walls in Yosemite - including an early ascent of El Capitan’s Tangerine Trip. He then began guiding in his home state of NH and became the director of a local climbing school. Marc progressed to guiding high altitude climbs in 1986 including numerous trips to Denali, Aconcagua, the Himalayas, Ecuador, and Peru. Seeing the need for professional standards in mountain guiding, and wanting to get more information, Marc became involved with the American Mountain Guides Association, helping to develop its rock guides program as well as serving as an instructor and examiner. After thirty years of guiding, numerous courses and exams, Marc became the first internationally certified guide east of the Rockies and 3rd certified IFMGA Guided by the AMGA, the highest level of certification in guiding.

Marc is available as an instructor on a number of subjects and different types of terrain. Shoot him an email about availability in his AIARE Avalanche courses this winter or about his availability to instruct advanced map making, technical rock climbing, ice climbing, mountaineering, and backcountry skiing.
