Hop on your computer and join Marc Chauvin, author of the Mountain Guide Manual and former president of the American Mountain Guides Association, for a course on using free open-source software to trip plan and make your own maps.
Â
This course will be useful for climbers, runners, hikers, mountaineers, skiers, and many other users of outdoor spaces.
Â
Marc will teach skills like overlaying/combining multiple maps, using those maps on one's phone or watch, calculating elevation gain and loss over a given route, evaluating the potential sun exposure of a route, projecting potential avalanche danger using slope shading, and many others.
The course is free. All of those who sign up will be emailed a conference link to join on the day of the event.
This event has sold out. Please sign up on the waitlist to be first in line for the second and third repeats of this event happening soon
We will email the WebEx event link to all of those who have registered on the morning of the event. The link will go live 30 minutes before the start of the course to allow folks to get situated.
At the start of the event:
- Have your laptop/desktop ready with a (free) registered account with Caltopo and Google Earth downloaded and open.
- Be prepared to both use Caltopo and watch the talk at the same time. To make this possible, we suggest using a second monitor to expand the amount of screen space. If this isn't an option, participants could use an additional computer or tablet to watch the lesson while manipulating the software on their computer.
- Have a phone ready with Avenza downloaded (for free) and ready to use.
