GILLY MCARTHUR

A UK Arct'eryx Ambassador, illustrator and climber, Gilly is also a cold water swim coach and lifeguard.

Originally from the North of Scotland, Gilly now lives in the Lake District, where she is partial to an iced tarn to swim in and loves helping others find their space in the outdoors.

Much of Gilly's work is strongly tied into mental well-being and nature connection, and she has written numerous articles, participated in podcasts, and films in order to passionately share cold water immersion in natural bodies of water with a broader audience.

She works with CEOs, businesses, charities, and individuals. She is also part of the cold water practitioners coaching team working with “Outside2” - a University programme exploring the applications for openwater swimming to help improve well-being for NHS patients.

She says, “There’s a lot of fun to be had getting semi-naked and cold with strangers - I’d be delighted to share this knowledge with the Arc'teryx Crew in London - I'm looking forward to sharing an evening with you all!”

Charlie Smith

Let's get to know him

Charlie Smith is a renowned designer and Arctic explorer, celebrated for his pioneering expeditions in the Arctic, Scandinavia, Iceland, and Greenland. His achievements have earned him recognition as one of 'The New Shackletons: Britain's Next Generation of Explorers' by Gentleman's Journal, 'Most Inspiring Young Explorers' by Wired for Adventure, and one of the Top 10 Next Generation of Explorers by British Airways High Life magazine.

Over the past decade, Charlie has repeatedly ventured into the depths of the Arctic winter in Iceland, undertaking a journey that highlights the extreme challenges and unexpected outcomes of such expeditions. From battling isolated cabin fever and successive panic attacks to testing the very limits of his mental endurance, Charlie's experiences offer a profound insight into the harsh realities of Arctic exploration. He will share his personal stories of dealing with ongoing frostbite, debilitating blindness, and finding ‘comfort’ in the uncomfortable.

In 2024, Charlie made one final, determined attempt to retrace his steps from 10 years ago across the mountains of Southern Iceland. With a new team by his side, he sought to confront past failures and finally bring closure to this enduring expedition.
