It's time to get ready for hiking season, and that means brushing up on important outdoor safety skills including navigation!
Join us on Eagle Mountain in Coquitlam for a hands-on navigation workshop to learn the basics of using a map & compass from a Coquitlam Search and Rescue member.
100% of ticket proceeds will support Coquitlam Search & Rescue.

- In order to maintain an undisturbed learning environment, dogs will not be permitted.

WHEN: Sunday, June 4th 2023, 9am-2pm
WHERE: Eagle Mountain in Coquitlam (an exact location will be sent via e-mail to all participants prior to event)
Please note: We may re-schedule if weather is extreme with respect to rain and wind
BRING:
- A magnetic compass (no minimum specfication requirement)
- Comfortable shoes for walking on trails for up to 5km. See more details below.
- Weather-appropriate clothing. Please check local forecast prior to event.
- Umbrella if needed
- Sun protection as needed: hat, sunscreen, sunglasses
- Lunch, water, and snacks as needed
- Anything else you'll need to be comfortable outside for approximately 5 hours.
Maps of the area will be provided for use during the course.
Maps can be purchased for $20 cash following the workshop if desired.
ACCESSIBILITY:
- Roadside parking is available at meetup location.
- There are no washrooms on site (but plenty of tree cover)! Please plan accordingly and use Leave No Trace principles.
- The first 90 minutes will be theory - those who prefer to sit during that time may bring a camping chair. Participants should expect to be on their feet for the remainder of the workshop.
- The navigation course will take place on tracks, hiking trails and mountain-bike trails.
- The terrain will be a mixture of flat, moderate and a few short steep sections. Underfoot there will be a few loose sections, so good walking shoes or hiking boots are recommended.
- Participants should expect to walk about 5km with approximately 300m elevation gain.
- The walking pace will be easy with many starts and stops.

Steve has been a member of Coquitlam Search and Rescue for over 8 years. He has over 40 years of mountain experience, including ascents of peaks in the Himalayas, Denali, European Alps, Scandinavia, UK, and more recently British Columbia.
Steve is passionate about spreading the gospel of outdoor safety, a passion inspired by a near death experience in the Alps over 20 years ago. Steve is a cartographer by profession, producing local hiking maps and custom maps for a wide variety clients.
