"When I was younger, my mom used to wake my brother and I at 6AM to go hiking with a Korean hiking club. I hated it! We were the only kids. We were on a mission to get from one point and back (what's the point?). It was boring and I wasn’t fit at all. Fast forward to age 21, where I found myself facing death multiple times, not directly in the face as it was not my own life, but as an advocator, an educator, an empath, and above all, a human in my nursing scrubs. I didn’t realize at the time but this threw me into an existential crisis. It started me on a journey of answering the hard questions that elevate us to live a conscious life. It mostly felt suffocating and I felt like I could only breathe when I was outdoors exploring or climbing a wall. It truly was outer peace that helped me find my inner peace at the time. I used to run and hide or freeze in fear, doubt, and pressure embodying all the limiting beliefs that came with being a Korean woman in America.
Today I am committed to my peace, my wellness, and my freedom and helping others to do the same. On this journey, I recognized that the paradigms of society create disempowered people rather than educating them on how to thrive in their uniqueness. This leads to illness and this sparked my passions to change how we speak about wellness and health. Health needs to be tended to when you are well, not when you are diagnosed. Working in healthcare showed me how short life is and the outdoors showed me how amazing life could be. The outdoors makes me feel empowered and inspired. It challenges me, grounds me, and humbles me by reminding me how small I am yet makes me feel like I can conquer anything. The outdoors is often where I still find myself when I want to tune into my inner peace.
Can we talk a little more about how awesome it is to be a woman in this day and age? I love being a woman! Women are so incredibly strong and resilient. Even when constantly told no by the patriarchal society, we know what we deserve and continue to push the limits! Women are very empowered because we have to be and I think we handle that challenge with grace. The amount of change women in the past and present have created just in the last century speaks for itself! And now we have our first female Vice President! If you think about it, some of the most powerful things in life are considered a woman like Mother Nature! I love being a woman and being a part of womanhood where we can pick each other up and support each other. When one woman takes another step forward, she has just created space for all women to take one more step as well. A part of being a woman for me is reclaiming my voice, my body and my life which feels pretty revolutionary. I get to embody my feminine power which let’s me be connected to my mind, body and emotions, hold deeper connections, spread compassion, nurture, love fiercely, be vulnerable, observe and problem solve, and so much more!
Growing up as a Korean woman of immigrant parents in America has built my resilience to staying comfortable in uncomfortable places. When your identity is challenged everyday, you feel like your entire existence is uncomfortable if you let it or you rise above the noise and thrive. For a while, I felt a dichotomy in myself, trying to choose this or that rather than embracing the dualities, the “and/both” of what makes every space I am in interesting because of the many layers of perspective I see the world through. I stay comfortable in uncomfortable places by feeling comfortable in my own self--knowing who I am beyond labels and statuses, knowing my needs, and knowing that I am deserving to live a life that sets my soul on fire rather than listening to who society tells me to be, what I need, and where the glass/bamboo ceiling is. There is power in knowing what is causing the discomfort, whether that’s cold weather or societal constructs that were built to make you feel uncomfortable. When you can identify the cause, you can choose to find a solution, such as an Arc’teryx Firebee to stay comfortable in cold weather or seeking education, resources, and community to stay comfortable overcoming obstacles courses specifically built for you.
