Join us at Arc'teryx Chinook Saturday July 22nd from 12-4pm and meet artist Krissy Blakney. Krissy upcycles climbing carabiners into one of a kind dream catchers. Join us for a demo of the process and bring in your retired carabiners for Krissy to repurpose. Each carabiner donation will be entered to win an Arc'teryx piece.
My name is Krissy Blakney and I am a member of Elsipogtog First Nation (Mi'kmaw). I grew up off reserve in a small village known as Minto, New Brunswick which is the traditional unceded territory of the Wəlastəkwiyik (Maliseet), Mi’kmaq, and Passamaquoddy Peoples.
I discovered climbing in 2007 while studying at the University of New Brunswick and I credit climbing with setting me on a new healthier path in life. Climbing led me to my partner Ben, it led me to many beautiful places around the world, it led me to my career as an occupational therapist, and it brought me here to Treaty 7 territory where I have lived for just over 10 years.
I realized that climbing is a powerful connector. Not only did it connect me with so many amazing people and sacred places, it also reconnected me to myself and my culture. Now I am trying to share my passion for climbing with more Indigenous people in the hopes that it can inspire them on their personal journey to wellness and healing.
I look forward to connecting through storytelling and showing folks how I make the Carabiner Dreamers.
Wela’lin/Thank you.
