Stu Young, a Cree/Metis man from Ahtahkahkoop Cree Nation, is passionate about community building. He holds a Business Degree from the University of Alberta, and co-founded Cousins Skateboard Community to foster grassroots skateboarding programs. Since 2021, Cousins has reached over 1200 youth. Stu, an avid skateboarder for 25 years, lives in Medicine Hat with his wife Kayla and their children, Beckett and Eloise.
Cousins Skateboard Community partners with communities to bring skateboard parks to reserves and empowers youth to build communities around them."We believe youth require access to skateparks, but skateparks alone are not the answer. A skatepark is just concrete and angled cement that facilitates an activity. For us, the skatepark provides an opportunity to engage and empower the youth using skateboarding. It’s more about building a culture and community. The skatepark is secondary."
