MADHU NAGARAJA learned to swim as a child in India, in his hometown of Mysuru. It was there that he first learned about the Great Lakes when he was in Grade 5. Little did he know what a major role this lesson would later play in his life.

According to Canadian long distance swimming icon Marilyn Bell, “My friend Madhu Nagaraja has proven that he is an extraordinary athlete. He has swum the English Channel and conquered Lake Ontario and continues to train with diligence and a passion that comes from deep in his marathoner’s heart.”

Madhu devotes many hours working with both Great Lakes Open Water Adventures (GLOW) and Great Lakes Trust, a fund supporting scientific research, artistic expression, and civic
engagement for the Great Lakes.

Among Madhu’s swimming accomplishments:

2004 swam across the English Channel
2005 swam in Lake Ontario for the first time
2012 swam across Lake Ontario
2016 was part of a group that swam 1 mile in each of the Great Lakes in less than 24 hours
2017 first Canadian to swim across the Strait of Magellan
