We, as an urban population, have spent more time outdoors over the past year than ever before. The pandemic has re-instilled the importance and reinvigorated our relationship with the outdoors and with public spaces. Whether alone or in (small) groups, the way in which we experience the city’s public places and art is continually evolving.
Perhaps you’ve simultaneously lost and found your way in the city over the past year, a born-again tourist in the absence of travel. What new walking or exercise routes have you discovered? Have you been surprised by new meaningful places or art along said journey? How can artists and designers set the stage for finding creative renewal in the city?
Join Lemay’s Director of Interior Design, George Foussias, and Canadian artist, Jordan Sook, as they discuss their favorite outdoor spaces across the city and explore the role of design and art in the creation of better cities.
This event will be attended in person by a small, socially distanced invite only group of guests of the speakers.
Jordan Sook is a contemporary mixed media artist who works and resides in Toronto, Canada. Beginning his artistic career in 2015, he has since exhibited work throughout Canada in various shows notably Union Station ,Toronto (2021),Vancouver Convention Centre, Vancouver (2020) and MacLaren Art Centre, Barrie (2017). His body of work ranges from acrylic paintings to sculptures and installations of recontextualized themes in pop-culture. Sook’s distinctive personal style emanates youth and playfulness through colour, line, and form. The work invites us to view the world from a subjective innocence, as we experience a recollection of joyfulness and optimism relating to human infancy.
Â
Sook’s latest installation titled Harvest (2021) was held at the Toronto Media Arts Centre. The work explores sustainable placemaking, representation, and the future of media arts and technology among the creative space.
Â
Jordan Sook is inspired by acts of imposition and alteration, recontextualizing elements within pop-culture to create new narratives. Sook looks to change the landscape of Canadian art and broaden the framework and understanding of Black art as a whole.
As design director for the Toronto studio of Lemay, George draws on over 20 years of local and international experience to promote design excellence in his project leadership in collaboration with various teams.
Â
George has won over 30 international design awards, including the Retail Council of Canada’s Excellence in Retailing Award for the Toronto Eaton Centre’s Samsung Experience Store and Best of Year from Interior Design magazine for Toronto’s The Travel Centre (both as Design Director for Quadrangle Architects).
Â
George's in-depth knowledge of construction and engineering, architectural background and industrial design practice inform his exceptional understanding of how to conceptualize a design and successfully guide it through all development phases to produce a result that satisfies timelines, budgets, aesthetic values, client vision and brand context.
