Girls* on Ice Canada (GOIC) is a tuition-free, science-immersion field program developed for Canadian high school girls. It is a unique program that integrates science, art, and mountain skills to let girls experience cross-disciplinary perspectives on leadership, the values of science, and the scientific method in an inspiring and challenging outdoor setting. The 12-day GOIC immersion experience builds confident, life-long advocates for scientific discovery and mountain conservation. The program includes one-on-one interaction with female scientists and artists; facilitated discussions on the value of earth science in society, covering issues such as climate change and water resource degradation; and meeting challenges through which participants build self-confidence in multiple ways. We aim to primarily serve girls from minority groups, economically disadvantaged and remote communities, and First Nations communities.
[Girls* = we welcome cisgender girls and transgender, agender, Two Spirit, nonbinary, intersex, and genderqueer youth.]
In 2011, Steve Matthews had a bright idea—with his kids completely hooked on snowboarding, he rallied a few friends and set out to build Yellowknife’s first and only rope tow. Without city permission or permits, the team went to work on the abandoned gravel mine on the outskirts of town, creating what would eventually become the epicenter of community and snow-sliding in the Northwest Territories. Welcome to the Pit.
To most skiers in British Columbia, Ts’zil (Mount Currie) is a true gem. The gorgeous mountain looms high above Pemberton and is home to many stories of skiers and snowboarders pushing themselves on the classic lines of its Northwest Face. But while Ts’zil is the backdrop to life in the valley, it’s easy to forget that the history of Ts’zil goes much deeper than what's been skied or snowboarded.
