ABOUT GIRLS ON ICE

Girls on Ice leads tuition-free multi-day expeditions for high school girls that interweave science, art, and backcountry travel. Expeditions are led by professional women scientists, artists, and wilderness guides. Throughout each expedition, the team engages in scientific and artistic inquiry about the environment around them. In small groups, participants design and conduct scientific projects, which they present to the public on the last full day of their expeditions. Creating connections to the traditional lands of Indigenous people through movement, personal growth, and inclusive access to outdoor activities.

SOUL OF MIISTAKI CULTURAL CLIMBING CAMP

Soul Of Miistaki offers an annual BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour) cultural climbing camp in the Bow Valley where participants learn climbing skills, build commuity and learn from Elders.  An important element of the climbing weekend is the opportunity to share our experiences and interact with Elders who will guide discussions and teach Indigenous traditions. CONTINUUM

From rubbish to resource, a tent was assembled from 137 unrepairable jackets. The kaleidoscope of colour is a creation from material well used and deserving of more life. Exploring the possibilities of circularity, Michelle Parker, Elena Hight, Spencer O’Brien, Lucy Sackbauer, Robin Van Gyn, and Tatum Monod take the tent on a winter journey in its new form, creating their own memories and moments with its walls.

AETHER 5

Æther 5 is a short visual journey of self discovery featuring the snowboarding of Spencer O’Brien. Allowing her mind to tune into the pace of the world around her, she blurs the line between reality and the ethereal. It is an exploration of the ancient concept of æther, the fifth element. The space between matter - a place where light stands still. As a tribute to this theme, every frame on screen was captured directly in-camera, unaltered.

Featuring: Spencer O'Brien

Film Time: 8 minutes

THE PASS

Rogers Pass represents one of the most complicated avalanche programs in the world. Ski touring through its storied terrain is only possible thanks to the visionary mountain guide who architected the ski system years ago, and the woman she mentored who’s now at the helm of that avalanche program. The stakes are higher than most skiers could ever imagine.

109 BELOW

A tale of resilience, grit and elite rescue volunteers going out of their way to save the lives of strangers, 109 BELOW traces how an attempted rescue on Mount Washington in 1982 changed not only the course of two climbers’ lives - but also the lives of the rescuers who attempted to save them, and the future of prosthetics, forever.
