Michelle Parker

DISCIPLINE: SKI

SPONSOR: ARC'TERYX

Early on, Michelle had to decide whether to pursue skiing or soccer. While she chose skiing, she never lost her team player mentality. From ski racing to freestyle, Michelle artfully blends her love for all things snow when big mountain skiing.

Blazing through competitions and dropping world-class ski film segments, Michelle proved to be a force majeure. She has maintained an aura of grace throughout the highs of her greatest achievements and the lows of her injuries. Her benevolence towards everyone around her has made her an esteemed global athlete.

Michelle is not only a trailblazer for female athletes in ski films, but she is also a star on the production side. When she isn’t dropping crazy lines, she can be found strumming her ukulele or taking care of her 100-plus compost worms.

Elena Hight

DISCIPLINE: SNOWBOARD

SPONSOR: ARC'TERYX

From landing her first sponsorship at age 8, the trajectory of snowboarder Elena Hight’s career has been a steady upward curve – taking her to the US Snowboard team from the precocious age of 14 into the maelstrom of professional half-pipe competition for the next 16 years.

Her talent took her all around the world, to two Olympics games, and the top spot of the X Games and the US Open.

Through it, she developed self-care practices including meditation and breathwork, that helped her find moments of peace in a hectic schedule where very little is in your control. These practices, as well as the attributes that made Hight such a progressive athlete, flavoured her post-competition emergence as a big mountain rider, a journey she documented in the 2020 Teton Gravity Research film Blank Canvas.

Hight believes that curiosity, not competition, is the driving force that fuels the world of winter sports, and that it’s important always to seek ways to open space – space to grow personally, and space to grow the sport and opportunities for others, especially women.

Her willingness to try something new, even if that meant publicly exposing herself as a rookie for the first time since childhood – resulted in the start of an apprenticeship as a big mountain rider, as well as Blank Canvas, which she shared with the hope it will “inspire people to get out of their comfort zone and pursue the dreams that often are quite scary and that mean leaving behind what you know.” Hight’s lifelong connection with the natural world, planted during her infancy in Kauai and childhood in Lake Tahoe, has deepened into a profound sense of gratitude and a fierce desire to protect the Earth.

Sam Kuch

DISCIPLINE: SKI

SPONSOR: ARC'TERYX

Nelson-raised Sam Kuch modestly attributes his otherworldly air awareness to his mom, a hardcore competitive gymnast and black belt in karate, who put Sam and his siblings through their paces on the trampoline and in the gymnasium.

Growing up in the Selkirk Mountains, and gaining his chops competing for four years as part of Whitewater Ski Resort’s freeride team, Sam attributes his down-to-earth energy to kind-hearted parents and the under-the-radar community of Nelson. He endured two seasons of disappointment, crashing instead of qualifying for the Freeride World Tour, before a timely text on closing weekend of the 2017-18 season asked him to play local tour guide for a film crew. Sam’s demonstration of the lines that made Whitewater great became a sizable part of the ensuing film and landed him “Discovery of the Year” award at the International Freeski Film Festival.

Within one season, he went from being a roofer who ripped aka the best skier no one had ever heard of, to an icon, spinning and stomping everything in his sights, winning a swag of Best Of awards.

Disarmingly humble in the face of his sudden celebrity, Sam is grateful to be tending the almost-lost dream of being a pro skier, and committed to enjoying the ride, giving back, and soaking up all that he can learn, be it in the mountains or working alongside his father as a carpenter.

Alannah Yip

DISCIPLINE: CLIMB

SPONSOR: ARC'TERYX

Alannah won her first National Climbing Championship at the tender age of 12. Today she’s Canada’s top “Overall” climber and part of the historic first wave of Olympic hopefuls who are evolving the sport of competition climbing.

Alannah grew up in Vancouver and spent her childhood in the mountains. Her local gym was home to Canada’s top competitors and coaches, and as a young climber, Alannah drew inspiration from the warm camaraderie and support.

She brings focus, stoke and formidable brain power to everything she does whether it’s building a training wall outfitted with sensors, rapidly analyzing a competition boulder move, or ripping a gnarly line on her mountain bike.

She’s a third generation engineer whose specialty is Mechatronics – or robots. Alannah has always remembered her roots, and as a coach for the Climb Base 5 North Shore Youth Team, she graciously trains younger climbers and gives back the support she received as a youth.

Sam Stroh

DISCIPLINE: CLIMB

SPONSOR: ARC'TERYX

How does a skateboarder become the youngest person to free climb El Capitan in a day? Growing up in Texas, Sam Stroh’s tendency to go “all in” was on full display.

When he found climbing at the age of 17, his capacity for investment shifted from the concrete bowls of Houston, to the canyons and crags of New Mexico. University led west, towards Smith Rock, Yosemite, Indian Creek, Joshua Tree, and pandemic disruptions meant Stroh informally majored in climbing. He traded his truck for a van and took full liberty of “hybrid learning”, writing papers in Yosemite’s Church Bowl parking lot, and climbing as much and as hard as he could.

Powered by a frothing keenness, canned chili and chocolate bars, power playlists and a sense that unfettered time was a limited commodity, Stroh turned his attention to El Capitan where, at 20, he became one of the youngest people ever to free climb Freerider in a day. By 22, he’d also free climbed Golden Gate, and climbed El Corazon in a day.

Now that his window of opportunity to climb full-time is staying open, Stroh is exploring how he can generate a contribution that is genuine, artful and inspiring. He has begun to balance his intensity with intentionality, to ground his exploits in a strong broad foundation. He still has the list of goals he scratched out as a teenager but thinks of those “stepping stones’’ as part of a long journey towards becoming the climber and the human, partner, friend, son and brother, he ultimately hopes to be.

Hamish McArthur

DISCIPLINE: CLIMB

SPONSOR: ARC'TERYX

Hamish Mcarthur’s climbing journey began when his parents, exasperated by their five-year-old’s urge to scale everything, fibbed about his age to get him into a local gym. What started as a safe outlet became a lifelong passion—one that stuck even as he grew into his 6-foot frame.

From regional comps to international youth events, Hamish quickly gained attention, becoming the youngest member of Team Great Britain at just 12. But the pressure of being a prodigy eventually stalled his progress. After years of winning everything he entered, Hamish suddenly found himself on the international youth World Cup circuit, unable to punch through beyond 4th spot. “I couldn’t figure out how to break through and win, to stop climbing defensively to not fall, rather than to get to the top.”

Then came the pandemic. With competitions on pause, Hamish rediscovered climbing for its own sake. Free from pressure, he trained harder than ever. In September 2021, he returned to win both bouldering and lead at his final Junior World Championships—then podiumed at the Senior Worlds weeks later. Now, he’s chasing gold at the 2024 and 2028 Olympics.

In his downtime, Hamish brushes up on existential philosophy to keep his life perspective in check, and relaxes by cooking, playing chess, and skateboarding.

Mike Gardner (In Memory)

DISCIPLINE: CLIMB, SKI

SPONSOR: ARC'TERYX

Talented and unassuming, alpinist Mike Gardner was a true climber’s climber. He passed away at age 32 while attempting the unclimbed north face of Jannu East, in Nepal.

Mike excelled at doing things fast and light, blazing up rock walls and across mountain peaks with trusted partners he loved. Continually drawn to the remote reaches of the planet - Antarctica, the Himalayas, Alaska, the Grand Tetons, Mike’s motivations were pure; to push the boundaries of sport, and do it with ethics, style and homage to those who came before. He climbed and skied for the sake of the craft, not for recognition, impressing everyone with his lack of ego and genuine enthusiasm.

Mike was a proud second-generation mountain guide. Born in Ridgway, CO, he spent his childhood chasing his dad everywhere from the Tetons to Nepal. His first mountaineering trips were at age eight, and he became one of the youngest guides Exum ever hired.

He lost his father in a climbing accident when he was 16 - he wrote about the parodox of the mountains giving and taking for Alpinist in 2022, while also evoking the simplicity and spareness of an existence he revelled in - “an expression of life rather than a fight for survival”.

Named one of the best skiers under 18 by Powder magazine, he moved on from the competitive freeski scene to seek more personally testing objectives, but was always a wildly beautiful and bold skier. He got an education degree, and devoted his life to the mountains. Industry veterans rated Mike’s ascent on Father and Son’s Wall as worthy of a Piolet d’Or award. He made climbing and skiing expeditions on every continent and never spent twelve months in a row in a single place.

A skateboarder, skier, climber, enthusiastic skijorer, writer and mountain guide, he refused to be boxed in by any label and pursued anything that intrigued him. Humble, playful, thoughtful, he was beloved of many, not just for his exceptional abilities, but for his curiosity, optimism and his gift at holding space for other people to flourish in the mountains.
